Why Nutrition Testing Can Be So Beneficial

For many people, there have been times in our lives when we have felt run down and know that we are not performing at our best. We eat well. We exercise. But still, we just seem to be lacking in something that we just can not quite put our finger on. If this sounds familiar, it might just be time for a visit to a health professional for some nutrition testing.

We all know that our bodies need vitamins and minerals. What we might not all know is that just using a dietary supplement like you can buy off the shelf at the local drug store may not be doing your body the good you think it is. Certain vitamins and minerals if taken in excess of what the body needs can actually have the reverse effect. Like the old adage says, there can be too much of a good thing.

If taken in amounts above the bodies needs, certain vitamins and minerals, like calcium for instance, can have a negative effect on the body and can have serious effects on the ability to absorb other nutrients. Rather than helping the body, the surplus nutrients can have the very real ability to create deficiencies making the body essentially lack what it actual needs. The spill on is then a possibly vicious circle that ends up with the body never getting what it actually requires.

Nutrition testing is a very viable solution. But it can be hard to know what kind of testing you actually need. There is not really any clear set answer to that but there is some facts that should be kept in mind. Normal nutrition testing is done using blood samples. The disadvantage of that is that blood is only able to be tested for the nutrients that are present in the blood at that particular time. This can lead to an inaccurate assessment of the bodies actual nutrient position.

Urine testing can be used to assess the nutrients leaving the body. As urine in very basic terms is the bodies way of expelling waste fluids, a urine test can be very useful. It can allow a reasonably accurate assessment of the nutrients that have been consumed by the body to function and can indicate what nutrient levels within the body may be.

Nutrition testing is able to be done through the use of saliva. It has been found that saliva is a good indicator for the sate of a persons lymphatic system, unlike blood and urine. As the lymphatic system is one of the primary running systems of the body, its muscles, the organs and the removal and storage of fats and fatty acids it can be a good way to assess nutrient levels.

By using a combination of the three tests, it is very possible for a trained professional to get a better understanding of how the body uses its vitamins and minerals and what nutrients it may require more or less of. From that understanding, a personalized nutrient intake program can be implemented which clearly sets out what vitamins and minerals to take or not take and at what levels.
