In case you didn’t know, New York has some pretty good pizza.
Some would say the best. Most would say the best. Ok, fine, its no question, New York City has the best pizza in the world.
From thin crust to coal-oven to Neapolitan to Sicilian, New York City has every type of pizza you would want. Maybe we don’t have deep dish, but congratulations Chicago, you and Pizza Hut can keep that one. Anyway, here are some of my favorite pies and slices in the Big Apple.
When it comes to Neapolitan pies there are two winners. Motorino and Keste. Both of these restaurants serve up authentic style pies from Naples with a doughy crust and an emphasis on fresh ingredients. The mozzarella is imported and the basil could not taste fresher. Una Pizza Napoletana would be the winner had it not gone out of business.
When it comes to pizza parlors that have been around forever, Lombardi’s takes the crown. Located just North of Little Italy, Lombardi’s serves up pizzas by the by (sorry, no slices to go here) in their famous coal oven. Lombardi’s is well known to be the oldest pizzeria in all of New York City.
When it comes to getting a solid slice when walking around the West Village Bleecker Street Pizza can’t be beat. If you are looking for a full meal, it’s a little heavy for my taste.
If you find yourself in Brooklyn, there is no shortage of fantastic pizza places to try. From Williamsburg to Fort Greene, there are legendary pizza places for all over here.
Lucali is my favorite of the aforementioned three and although the slices are some of the most expensive out there ($5 a slice!) and the line is usually around the block, it’s well worth it. I love Lucali and only wish I could head out there more often.
