If you want a great holiday idea, why not go to coastal Maine? There is so much to do there! Go kite flying, check out the fishing, head for the beach or go touring on a boat.
In fact, there is something for everyone in this beautiful state. Wait until you take a whale watching tour and get to watch whales and seals play, or go on a lobstering trip and pull in the catch with the crew. If fishing and marine life isn’t your speed, a sunset cruise will let you take in the breathtaking view of the sunset over water. It’s not to be missed.
If you like hiking or nature, you’ll be a huge fan of this area. There are miles of unspoiled natural habitat that are home to many types of wildlife.
Maybe you are more of the museum type than the nature hike type. You can still have a wonderful time in coastal Maine. There are numerous museums, lighthouses, historic sites, and galleries to choose from. There is an annual antique festival, but if you go at a different time of year just drop into one of the many antique shops that are common in this area.
You can even take part in a festival. Each year there is a blueberry festival and a lobster festival as well. If you time your trip right, you may even get to go to a literary event. Spend a little time in the beautiful local parks as well.
If you want romance and relaxation, you should definitely plan to stay in a bed and breakfast inn. Many of these in the coastal Maine area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One inn in the area is more than 300 years old, and has been continually kept open for business by the same family. If it isn’t the age and provenance of the inn you’re after but the amenities, you can find inns with AC, private decks, television, private baths, ocean views and even private beaches.
Check with different inns to get information on their unique offerings. Some will have things like two-person Jacuzzi tubs in the private bathrooms, or a heated pool, or a library with fireplace. You may find that your inn offers complementary newspapers and stationery, or bottled water and soda. Many have private phone lines in the rooms.
Remember that prices vary not only by inn and by room, but also by season. Check what the rate is for the period you want to stay, and ask whether the number includes all taxes. This way you’ll find out also if the inn you are checking into is only open during part of the year. Check also whether the inn has a complementary package deal. Many offer such deals, like a free lobster dinner at a local eatery if you book for two or more nights.
Be sure to check into all of the rules and regulations before you make your decision, also. Find out about child and pet accommodation if this will be relevant to you, ask about check in and check out times, house rules, reservation requirements, methods of payment accepted, and charge for cancellation. Better to know these things ahead of time and choose the right site, than to book a room that ends up being unusable or displeasing.
